Firenze, la Cupola del Duomo realizzata da Filippo Brunelleschi

Brunelleschi and the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence

…. here’s how Brunelleschi built the Dome of Florence Cathedral!

The animation, made by National Geographic, shows clearly the more recent hypothesis about the method of construction put in place by the brilliant Florentine architect. After six hundred years (1418-1434) the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore is still the world’s biggest Dome made of brick.

It is worth remembering the words of admiration and amazement that Leon Battista Alberti (1435) wanted to dedicate this monument and to his extraordinary Architect:

Who could ever be hard or envious enough to fail to praise Pippo the architect [Brunelleschi] on seeing here such a large structure, rising above the skies, ample to cover with its shadow all the Tuscan people, and constructed without the aid of centering or great quantity of wood? Since this work seems impossible of execution in our time, if I judge rightly, it was probably unknown and unthought of among the Ancients

(Leon Battista Alberti, On Panting, Prologue)
