The guided tour starts from the walls still protecting San Gimignano and where the doors that give access to the city open. As modern pilgrims, following the path that once belonged to the ancient Via Francigena, we start to walk along the streets where ancient hospitals and imposing tower-houses were built, where narrow alleys between house and palace walls open to offer a sudden view to wide landscapes: vineyards, woods and olive groves alternating in a game of skilful balances, renewing, like verses of an ancient poem, the deep bonds connecting the treasures of San Gimignano to the countryside. The Via Francigena takes us to the heart of San Gimignano, centre of the powers that shaped and made this city so great: the Duomo and the Palazzo del Podestà, the Guelph and the Ghibelline towers, rival powers overturned by the Municipality that built here its headquarter and where Dante Alighieri was welcomed. Our journey continues towards the highest point of the hill where Florence, after subduing San Gimignano, built a fortress: a strategic place from which the entire Valdelsa can be seen, it is here that the Etruscans began to write the history of our city.
